After conducting a detailed review of Goose VPN, we can conclude that it is an average VPN provider with a user-friendly design, competitive features, and cheap pricing. There were however a few problems that we faced while using Goose VPN, which include:
Goose VPN started in 2014; it is a newcomer in the VPN world. The Netherlands based VPN provider comes with strong encryption. It also claims to be one of the safest VPN services, which we will see at the end of the review, and provide OpenVPN and IKEv2 protocol support. Since it’s a Dutch VPN, it is obliged to share online user information with eight members of the agreement in the light of national security.
Usability | Easy to Use |
Netflix | Only on Special Streaming Servers |
Number of Servers | 63+ |
VPN Protocols | PPTP, OpenVPN, IKEv2, L2TP |
Leak Protection | No IPv67 or DNS Leak Protection |
Torrenting | Allowed only on selected servers |
Devices | Unlimited |
Minimum Cost of Subscription | $2.00 |
Trial Period | Yes (30-Day Free Trial) |
Seeing the prices of Goose VPN packages, it was quite shocking how much it cost. Having 3 plans in particular, here’re the details:
Both packages offer unlimited simultaneous connection but believe us; the limited version won’t go that far because of the limited data cap. Goose VPN also provides an add-on to prevent security vulnerability for only $0.50 per month with an annual plan. With this add-on plan, you add anti-virus, anti-malware, firewall protection, and anti-phishing.
Goose VPN only offers 6 payment methods including:
Ideal Cards
Visa
Master
American Express
Paypal
Giro Pay
There are no anonymous payment methods available in the list which makes it a less reliable VPN service.
GooseVPN supports four VPN protocols, including:
L2TP/IPSec is used for routers and modems; this protocol is notorious for providing average speed in many devices.
IKEv2, on the contrary, is speediest. This is why it is their standard protocol. It works remarkably on newer devices. However, GooseVPN claims that this protocol gets blocked easily.
PPTP is an almost same as L2TP, but this protocol is slightly older than its counterpart. This protocol works with nearly all devices and is supported by some router models.
The job of a VPN is not only to hide your IP but also to encrypt your traffic. GooseVPN makes sure that no third party can interfere and whatever happens between you and your internet is secured by complex encryption.
GooseVPN applies AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) with 256 Bit Keys which is also known as AES-256. The US government favors this encryption. AES-256 is hack proof and is often rendered as military-grade encryption.
While selecting a VPN, our first concern is how fast it is and whether it is leaking our IP or not?
GooseVPN claims to be the fastest and reliable VPN service. Let’s put their claim to the test.
The results were mixed. Using test servers in Canada, we downloaded a 50MB file from US servers. We did this while we were connected to UK and US VPN servers. Average download speed and the aggregated data are shown in the chart below.
It is clear from the picture above that internet speed decreased considerably after connecting to GooseVPN. We were satisfied with the upload speed as it was considered stable.
We are happy to report that there was no WebRTC leak detected using doileak.com and ipleak.net.
Now, it’s time to see the additional feature that Goose VPN offers:
GooseVPN offers Kill Switch, which is an essential tool for concerned privacy users. Kill switch prevents your IP address from exposing and automatically shuts your internet connection as the VPN disconnects. Kill switch also saves your actual IP address for being temporarily revealed when the VPN is off. Kill switch does protect users from possible leakage of identity, but it certainly can interrupt some critical tasks in the middle.
Kill switch is added in both plans offered by Goose VPN, means you don’t have to pay extra bucks for that. The only catch is that you have to switch it on by yourself as it is turned off by default.
It’s no secret that Netflix doesn’t encourage the use of VPNs to access its libraries, which is why they are shutting off VPNs access in throngs. Netflix is taking destructive measures to block traffic which is deriving from VPN servers.
However, the good news is Goose VPN offers access to Netflix and BBC iPlayer. Upon testing it we found out that Netflix was operational on only special streaming servers.
Following is a list of servers which supported Netflix.
– Canada Works pretty fine.
– UK works (only on special streaming servers)
– US works ( only on special Streaming servers)
– Netherlands Works (only on special streaming servers)
It is an undeniable fact that the Republic of China has one of the most complicated IP filtering systems to block Instagram, Twitter, and even the social media giant Facebook. Moreover, Apple blocked all VPN in the Chinese app store.
China’s “Great Firewall” is competent enough to keep many VPNs away from the reach of its citizens. Users have reported “No internet access” using GooseVPN in China. Unfortunately, GooseVPN doesn’t work on Chinese soil. Since it is not something to test directly if you have an experience using GooseVPN in China then tell us in the comment section below.
Thinking of using Goose VPN in China? Sorry, you’re out of luck, but don’t worry there are still some VPNs that bypass “The Great Firewall.”
Netherland is often known for (laissez-faire) approach which means: to give their people freedom of what they want to do, but sadly it is not like that in this case.
Netherland is a part of nine eyes agreement with France, Norway, United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Denmark. According to this agreement mass surveillance of data is collected to spy you and maintain a record of your activities for national security.
On the basis of Goose VPN geographical location, if you want a VPN for security and privacy, then Goose VPN shouldn’t be on top of your list.
GooseVPN is compatible with almost all platforms and operating systems including, Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Linux, and Routers. They also work with Android TV routers and also have a Chrome OS extension which can be used without installing the desktop client.
Unlike a few others, Goose VPN has native apps to install on your phone. You can search app store and play store for a dedicated app and enjoy privacy on unlimited devices.
Goose VPN also has APK installation file which can be directly downloaded from their website and installed on a phone if you know how to do that.
You can use unlimited devices with one account at the same time. It not only saves a few bucks but also gives you the leverage to connect as many devices with a single subscription. However, if you are using a limited 50GB data subscription package, then we bet you will suck it all up in no time.
Goose VPN’s offers 24/7 live chat customer support. The provider can also be contacted via email and social media platforms. If you have general queries, you can also check their FAQ section for the solution. They do list a phone number as well but stress on not providing any technical assistance on it.
Goose VPN FAQs are divided into multiple categories. These include account, general information, payment, privacy, routers and technical issues. Dividing FAQs into separate categories makes it easy for the user to get familiar with the product.
These FAQs can be accessed in different languages as well, which eventually helps people from different countries have a good knowledge of the product. This gesture shows that Goose VPN knows how to accommodate diverse customer base. We found FAQs helpful as they covered most of the basic queries.
Goose VPN offers support form which is more like a “Ticket Option.” You open a ticket by filling in all the necessary details and wait for your turn. You must submit valid information including your name, email address, operating system and nature of the request. The GooseVPN support responds you on your mentioned email address. This support form is indeed not the fastest. However, it does resolve the query to some extent.
We conclude this review by highlighting some of the astounding features and some questionable ones. Features that recommend Goose VPN only include a wide range of compatibility and Netflix streaming. On the contrary, it has doubtful privacy since it is the Netherlands based VPN, which falls under the category of nine eyes agreement.
Other than privacy, the speed was not striking at all. We witnessed a slow speed which is a huge setback for any VPN provider. In the age where VPN competition is at an all-time high, Goose VPN should gear up and learn to serve its users with more features.
