1. ExpressVPN

expressvpn

This VPN is definitely one that is always at a top spot in the business. Not only is it one of the most popular, but it is also one of the oldest. And for this reason, it has garnered a strong foundation of trust amongst us VPN fanatics.

You’ll always be safe with this provider because they even ensure that your privacy is their number one priority. Not to mention, it is one of the largest providers since they have server locations in over 94 countries! This way, you get a ton of locations to choose from.

It also has super tight data encryption which ensures your traffic to be completely hidden. And to give you the best sense of security, it maintains a strict no-log policy which basically promises not to log or keep track of your history and data. 2. Private Internet Access

Private Internet Access

Private Internet Access ia a truly reliable and trustworthy VPN. Here’s why:

PIA provides a secure virtual private network tunnel between you and the servers with super strong encryption. This enables you to appear as if they are another system on the Internet and, additionally, secures you on public wifi networks. This, with the addition of clearing cookies and any website session data, will effectively protect their identity, privacy, and security online.

With more than 35000 servers on the network, you are going to have it tough finding too many other VPNs that can bost more. Disappointingly, however, there are only 84 countries that you can connect to. There are a few other VPN providers that can offer substantially more than that.

PIA provides a VPN service that is easily to use which is one of the biggest and best that people can use when looking for high levels of privacy when browsing the internet. Our Private Internet Access review will look at all of the major aspects of PIA when compared to other VPNs that are available such as how many servers and countries you can connect to worldwide, whether there are any limits and what the special features are.

3. CyberGhost VPN

cyberghost vpn

CyberGhost runs its services from the British Virgin Islands just like the top 2 providers on this list, ExpressVPN. What you can take away from this is that it’ll definitely keep your information secure. Why? Because this country actually doesn’t implement any obligatory data retention law. So, CyberGhost can offer a no-log policy and actually stick to it.

While they still have a limited number of servers, 9738 to be precise, it is still growing and will continue to expand in the future. Its locations are available in over 91 countries scattered throughout Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, Africa, and around the Asia Pacific. Of course, its coverage includes the most popular locations like the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada.

If you’re on a budget, this VPN should also make it on to your list of affordable providers in the VPN comparisons. And yes, they also offer 7 simultaneous connections.

4. IPVanish VPN

IPvanish

IPVanish is also another VPN that has recently entered the arena. A good thing that sets this above from the rest is that they actually own all their servers. This means to say that they have more control over their servers since they keep everything in-house. Good news for you, this means that you can enjoy a more controlled security system. However, the only downside to this provider is that they only have server locations in about 75 countries. So, you can’t really expect to get the same speeds compared to those in the top 5.

It has over 40000 IP addresses and also has the kill switch as one of its security features. The feature that you get here which isn’t present in any other VPN is that it allows you to have  device connections per VPN license! This is a huge number which allows you to share it with all your family and friends, for one of the best prices, VPN can give you!

5. NordVPN

nord vpn

This next provider is dubbed as “the most secure VPN”. Here’s why:

It has double encryption. What is that? So you know how most VPNs encrypt your data to prevent snoopers from seeing your data? NordVPN does that too, but twice.

And as if this wasn’t secure enough, they have even more security features that you can’t find anywhere else. One of them is known as CyberSec. This is essentially a malware detector and ad-blocker in one. It proves to be really useful whenever you’re browsing the internet and shopping with your credit card. Now you get to have a hassle and stress-free experience whenever you go online!

If you ever run into any problems (which is highly unlikely), you can always go ahead and contact its customer support service. For convenience, they even have a live chat option available. As for its installment, it’s very quick and simple to download. In fact, it automatically configures for you so you don’t have to worry about anything at all! In addition, it has default recommendations for servers that are completely dependent on you and your needs. As for VPN comparison, it comes at around the same price range as CyberGhost which is a pretty sweet deal if you ask me.

6. PrivateVPN

privatevpn

Although this VPN is not on the top of the market, it is seriously underrated. It goes head to head with all the best VPNs in terms of features, reliability, security and speed (which as you already know, make up the essentials of a VPN).

A great thing to note about this device is that it allows for simultaneous use of up to 10 devices. So now, you can even choose to share this with your family members so you can all get in on the benefits. This makes them one of the best VPN for all devices.  And if you’re not a big fan of all those complicated payment schemes, PrivateVPN keeps it short and simple. They offer 3 options: monthly, quarterly, and yearly. And of course, it follows the golden rule (the longer lasting options offer the most discounts).

Although this provider doesn’t have a DNS leak protection feature built-in, it processes DNS requests through its own servers. However, you’ll need to set this up manually. But rest assured, you can follow its simple instructions that you can find on the website. And if you happen to run into any problems, you can always contact the customer service.

Even though it doesn’t claim to be the fastest server in this VPN comparison, it definitely has good speeds which could easily rival the head honchos.

6. Atlas VPN

Atlas VPN

AtlasVPN is without a doubt my top 2 pick. Why do you ask? Not only is it really secure, but it also has one of the best interfaces in the competition. In fact, the developers recently revamped the app which is why I like it so much. It’s really pleasing to the eye AND it is also simple & straight forward. What I mean by this is that you don’t have to fumble around when using the app because you’ll already know where everything is. So, if you’re new to the whole VPN thing, I think you’ll really appreciate AtlasVPN for this.

Another great thing about this provider is its pricing. Did you really think I was going to recommend an insanely overpriced VPN? Of course not! It has a lot of payment plans ranging from 1 month to 3 years. And a tip for you to remember for VPN comparison: the longer your commitment, the cheaper you pay. AtlasVPN ’s price ranges from $1.99 to $10.99 depending on your plan. As can be seen, this is one of our best price VPN on the list.

Another great factor that sets this provider apart from the rest is that it allows you to use  devices simultaneously. This means you can keep using your VPN on all your devices! Thus perhaps making this one the best VPN for all devices.

7. ZenMate VPN

zenmatevpn

ZenMate is one of the new providers that entered the VPN arena. But even so, it has a lot of users amounting up to 40 million worldwide. This service says it focuses on delivering a secure and efficient product to its users. In fact, they even take pride in the ‘turbo speed’ feature that they built in the software.

It uses the latest protocol, OpenVPN (TCP, UDP), L2TP, PPTP which basically ensures the safety of its users’ identities while allowing them to bypass geo-restrictions and censorship.

They have a lot of payment options available including free and trial versions for people that simply want to test it out and get a feel of things.

You’ll be glad to know that this provider is also quite easy to use. The desktop versions even have a few additional features like download and VoIP capabilities. But before you connect to any of its servers, you need to make sure you select the right one for your purpose.

8. VyprVPN

VyprVPN is also known as Golden Frog VPN because this is the company behind this service.

You’ll be glad to know that this paid VPN offers great features, beneficial add-ons, and lighting internet speeds. It’s also known to be very easy to use. From downloading, installation, to launching and using the app, it all seems to be very simple and straightforward which should be great for beginners.

While the price and the customer service seems great, it’s really the speed and reliability features that don’t disappoint. Like most VPN comparisons, it makes sure not to keep any logs of your data. So you can trust that no matter what happens, both your identity and online activity are kept safe.

It also has a feature that is unique to this provider and it is called: Chameleon. From the name itself, this technology camouflages the OpenVPN protocol. It is known that OpenVPN is actually blocked by Chinese censors. But with VyprVPN, you can freely access any censored or geo-restricted sites even in countries like China.

They even have payment plan options for both home and business users. The home plan has unlimited data but does not have access to the Chameleon protocol whereas the premium plan does.

9. Hotspot Shield VPN

hotspotshield

Hotspot shield was released around the year 2008 in Silicon Valley. Being an American VPN, it could prove to have either a positive or negative effect on its users.

Since this is at the bottom of the ranking, this provider only has about 3200 servers located in over 80 countries worldwide. However, it still uses the same 256-bit AES encryption that you find in most of the top services. While its definitely not the fastest VPN provider on the market, it tries to make up for it with its data compression abilities. And, it automatically deletes user details in order to truly keep your identity anonymous.

If you’re planning to share, you’ll be glad to know that Hotspot VPN offers up to 5 licenses per subscription. This means you can also share this service amongst your family and friends.

And, if you simply want to test it out, you can also avail of their 45 days money-back guarantee.

This provider is really what we call a VPN veteran. Because it’s been on the market for years, with ups and downs. It had some trouble in the past regarding privacy. But the service has been audited and is now back in the game. When you install PureVPN, you get one of the best VPN ever for streaming, torrenting or private browsing.

And you won’t break the bank. Indeed, it offers the cheapest service, thanks to an aggressive sales strategy. But the quality is not discounted with user-friendly apps available on most platforms and dedicated servers for Netflix, Hulu and other popular streaming services.

How to choose a good VPN

What you need to understand first is that most top VPN companies provide more or less, the same services. Some have similar security features, policy, and even price. But don’t be so set in choosing your top free VPN services just yet. Because what differentiates them is their “specialty”. Some VPN’s focus on privacy while others lean toward internet speed. What I’m trying to cover here is which ones are what I consider all-rounders. I’m taking all aspects into account and ranking it according to which give you the most out of your subscription.

Like I said earlier, all top VPN services have different aspects of what makes them a good, reliable provider. I’ll go through all the basics and give you everything you need to know about how I ranked the top VPN companies.

Security and Privacy

This is the main priority of almost all top VPN services in the market. You’ll notice that they all promote the tightest security which would ensure your anonymity and the safety of your personal information.

As you may have known already, every user connected to the internet has a unique IP address exclusive only to them. When you browse the internet casually, anyone is capable of tracking your IP address down and exposing your identity.

One of the main functions of a top VPN is to hide your real IP address and give you a virtual one. This means that it’s helping you hide and trick any snoopers into thinking you’re somewhere else when you’re really not. This process is actually a double blade that can both maintain your privacy and give you geo-restricted access at the same time – but we’ll get to that later.

Another security feature that most top VPN services have is their “no-log” policy. If you’re unfamiliar with this term, it essentially means that it doesn’t log or store any of your traffic content. On regular internet usage, your history, IP address and even some of your personal information is logged and can eventually be traced back to you. But when you get one of the top VPN services which offer strong encryption, you can completely hide all your activities from prying eyes.

One of the most critical pieces of security in the VPN world is called a kill switch. A kill switch’s main function is to shut off your internet connection whenever your VPN server gets disrupted. Once your VPN connection is interrupted, there’s nothing encrypting your data anymore which makes your information accessible to third-parties once again. The kill switch is what ensures that this doesn’t happen because once it detects a compromised server, it closes down all open applications to keep your information from being made public.

If you still have no clue about how to tell which VPNs have these security features, I made sure to recommend the top VPN services that have them.

Speed

When it comes to speed, the number of servers play a huge role. If you choose a VPN company with a small number of servers, the tendency is, it becomes overloaded with users.

This has the same principle as WiFi. Take this, for example, you live with 10 people in your house and you all share 1 WiFi router. You already know that once everyone starts using the internet at the same time, the connection gets painfully slow.

Most of the top VPN services have thousands of server locations all around the globe. This doesn’t just give you speed, but a good number of options as well. With such a large number of VPN servers, you’re free to choose from more than just 1 in each country.

With any of the top VPN companies, not only is your download speed unparalleled, but you can also relax without having to worry about buffering videos and gaming problems.

Multiple devices (simultaneous connections)

It’s already undeniable that getting a VPN for your desktop or laptop is what you’re planning to do. But as you keep using it over time, you wish you could have it on your mobile devices too so you can take it everywhere you go.

But what if I told you that you can use the top VPN simultaneously on a number of devices?

Some providers offer this feature using 3 to 7 devices. But this doesn’t only benefit you form when you want to use different equipment. This comes into play when you and your family are arguing about whose turn it is to watch that Netflix show they’ve been binging. Using one of the top VPN companies, you can all watch your favorite movies at peace.

However, this feature isn’t available in what some consider the “top free VPN”. This is a  difficult feature to come by which is why it should be paid for.

Almost all the providers, on the top VPN services, allow you to use their app on different mobile devices at the same time. Some even enable you to use it on your gaming console. This makes it extremely convenient for you whenever you want to quickly switch between your gears.

Easy to Use

None of the providers would have taken a spot on the top VPN services rankings if it wasn’t easy to use. None of the top free VPN’s could ever hope to compete in this category.

Since not all the subscribers are keen to be tech-savvy, the top VPN services made sure to create an interface that’s easy to navigate.

For this particular criteria, I recommend the first pick on the top VPN services list: ExpressVPN. Its interface is really deserving of the title: top VPN. The features and controls on this one are all pretty straightforward so it’s perfect for both beginners and experts alike.

Unblocks geo-restricted sites

VPN’s are famously used to access websites and apps that would be otherwise unavailable in your region.

The VPN was originally created for workers who wanted to access company files away from work. Since they weren’t at the office all the time, they still wanted a way to be able to work on them from the comforts of home.

This is because the top VPN services are able to use IP address manipulation to bypass blocked sites. The sites only grant access to a certain type of address. So, the software hides your real IP address and gives you one that could be used to open the site.

As I was saying earlier, this double-blade feature of the top VPN companies does more than just keep you safe. You can use it to access your Netflix account using the US server to get the full movie library, or you could use it to get to your work files and have it done at home.

The location of your server differs from what you’re trying to access. Simply browsing the web and social media would connect you to a local server. Trying to stream movies or games, however, makes you choose a server in the region of the subject.

The top VPN services also come in pretty handy when visiting countries like China and North Korea. In these countries, they ban a lot of sites that we normally use on a daily basis. They block Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, and even Google. With this service, you can easily access your accounts and go about your day like any other.

However, some of the top free VPN’s can’t even access servers in certain countries which makes it quite useless. So keep this in mind if you’re still considering it.

The top VPN companies can access literally any site you could think of. If that doesn’t seem worth it, then I don’t know what does.

Customer Support

A legitimate VPN company would, of course, need to have customer support.

While using this software, problems almost never happen. But when it does, it gets fixed right away because of their quick response rate.

I myself ran into a couple of minor issues while I was using it. I was able to contact them very easily and then they gave me really simple instructions on how to fix it myself. Sometimes there wouldn’t even be a real problem, I was just being clueless. But their staff is more than happy to cater to your every need.

Only the top VPN would have outstanding customer support. Some of them have 24-hour chat support, and some have call centers. Rest assured that after contacting them, your problems would disappear.

The Benefits You can get with a VPN

Now that you know what a VPN can do, you’re probably wondering if it’s really worth it. I myself was once in your shoes and really didn’t want to get the best VPN app if it meant paying for it. But here are the reasons why you should definitely consider getting a subscription:

Access Geo-restricted Sites

This is actually one of the most famous reasons why people get a VPN. I’m pretty sure that we all have, at some point, been blocked access to a site or content because of censorship or geo-restrictions.

This is probably because most sites like Netflix and BBC have binding contracts that only allow them to show their content within specific regions. This is why you’ll notice that the Netflix movie library varies from country to country.

And governments, businesses, and universities also love to use censorship. In countries like China and North Korea, you’re not allowed to access Facebook, YouTube, Google, Instagram, or even Twitter. Some universities even block students from accessing certain sites when on campus.

But with a VPN, you can easily bypass geo-restrictions and censorships in a breeze. You see, it works by taking your real IP address and hiding it. Then, it gives you another IP address (which you choose yourself) and to the outside world, it seems as if you’re somewhere else.

Let’s say for example you want the full American version of Netflix. All you have to do is simply pick out any VPN in the United States, and Netflix will think you’re actually within its boundary!

However, not all providers are capable of this. A lot of sites are actually gearing up to fight against proxies and VPNs. For the people that randomly choose services, they end up getting blocked. So, if this is your purpose, then you should definitely pick out one of the best VPN apps that I recommended earlier on. Because these are the only providers that are guaranteed to bypass geo-restrictions and censorship.

Protect Your Privacy When Streaming and Downloading

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. From the name itself, it majors on giving you privacy by establishing your own personal network connection. With this, you’re essentially safe from almost all threats and snoopers lurking on the web.

The Dangers of Free VPNs

If you are new to the VPN world, let me explain to you the VPN comparison between a paid and a free VPN.

Now trust me, I know how much you would love to avoid spending extra money especially if you think it’s for a service you won’t use often. Been there, done that.

If you look around well enough, you’ll definitely spot a bunch of VPN services claiming to be without charge. But think about it, there are so many expenses in the making of a VPN so why would anyone even think about giving it out for free. Wouldn’t they be losing money?

If you’re not paying with cash, then you’re paying with something else. Most free VPNs actually don’t place your privacy as their number one priority. In fact, there have been a lot of cases where different VPNs SOLD their client’s personal information to advertising companies looking to sell their products. That’s right, private data was given out to random people looking to make a quick buck. Instead, I strongly suggest you check our list of the best VPN ever.

Another reason why I wouldn’t recommend a free VPN is that you wouldn’t get as much out of it compared to a paid VPN. Similarly, we strongly suggest choosing the best price VPN.

With a paid VPN, you can unlock unlimited bandwidth and access any geo-restricted sites. But unfortunately, most free services can’t. In fact, some come with a limited data cap of only 500 MB per month. I don’t think that’d be enough for anyone especially if you’re one to stream movies often.

And like I said earlier, not all providers can bypass censorship and geo-restrictions. Not even some paid VPNs can so how much more when we talk about a free VPN?

Getting Started With the Best VPN

You can use any service from the list but I recommend the one that took the first spot: ExpressVPN. It is by far the BEST provider I have ever tried. It exceeded all my expectations and criteria for judging so easily. I mean, it didn’t place first in the top VPN services list for no reason.

The setup process is really nothing to be afraid of. Everything from purchase, installation, to launching is really easy. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to get a top VPN for PC.

Simply follow the 3 steps below:

  1. Sign up to the service
  2. Download and install the app on your device
  3. Log in and connect to a VPN server to hide your IP and unblock content

FAQ

What is a VPN?

Time to go back to the basics. Before you dive straight in, you must first know what it is in order to fully grasp which one you should get.

A VPN is short for Virtual Private Network. From the name itself, it specializes in giving you your own secure private network. This network creates an encrypted connection, much preferably called a ‘tunnel’. This tunnel connects your computer to the VPN server and is where all your internet traffic passes through.

Did you know that VPNs were actually first used by office workers? That’s right, they used this program to access their company network outside the workplace. In this way, they were able to keep working even when at home or even when on vacation.

Additionally, to really get the best value for your money, you have to choose the best VPN for all devices.

How does the best VPN app work?

Now that you have a little background, it’s time to get into the details. But don’t worry, I promise I won’t be using any hard to understand terms.

It’s quite simple actually, the most secure VPN basically hides your traffic but still makes sure it reaches its destination. Because of its strong encryption, nobody else will ever know what you are up to. They won’t even know that you’re using the internet at that very second! So with this, you are completely virtually invisible and therefore, safe from prying eyes.

Another way the best VPN to use helps you out is by hiding your online activity from your ISP (Internet Service Provider). Did you know that your ISP can see everything you’re doing and even dictate how fast or slow your internet is going to be? Whenever you stream or torrent, it intentionally throttles your bandwidth to discourage you from it. But with the most secure VPN, since you’re hidden from everyone else, your ISP can’t see you and therefore can’t limit your internet speed.

We suggest you get the best VPN for all devices.

Does the most secure VPN double as an anti-virus?

Before you get all excited, keep in mind that while the most secure VPN can hide you, it can’t protect you from malware and viruses. For this, you have to use actual anti-virus software. This is merely the prevention of nasty things from getting into your computer. The best way to keep yourself safe online is to always be aware of your activity and avoid clicking on random things all the time.

The most secure VPN shields your online activity from hackers that are always trying to steal your identity. It can even hide you from government agencies that are constantly looking in on you. And, you can say goodbye to those pesky pop-up ads while you’re at it. This is because a paid VPN can actually avoid permitting websites that use cookies. Now, you can safely and conveniently browse the internet at ease.

What is the best free VPN?

It doesn’t sound appealing having to pay a monthly plan for something you think you’d barely use. You probably got reeled into the ones that seem the cheapest, if not, already picked the top free VPN of your choice.

While there are free VPN offers out there, the service you get is not the best compared to when you actually pay monthly to avail of the full experience. But just in case you do consider it, I also tried and ranked the top free VPNs to see which ones seemed the most worthy. Either way, it’s completely up to you whether you want to take the risk or not.

Are VPNs legal?

Although IP manipulation sounds shady, it’s actually perfectly legal. There is nothing dangerous or secretive about any of the top VPN companies. It doesn’t store any of your computer traffic or your identity so rest-assured, you’re in good hands.

Conclusion

Now you know everything there is to know about choosing a good VPN. You can pick whichever suits your liking from my top VPN companies listed above. Just remember that a subscription is a very small price to pay for a service that is guaranteed to only provide benefits.

You should always put your safety first in everything that you do. Don’t risk searching for the top free VPN because it might not be worth it. Just stick to my recommended list and you should be fine.

That’s it for now. If you’re starting to get interested in the VPN world, we post a lot more about it than just top VPN for PC and mobile devices. Have a look around and see what else VPN’s are good for. Remember that what you expect is not always what comes about.

I hope you got something from this article. Surely you were able to come to a decision by now, maybe with ExpressVPN. May your VPN experience be nothing but smooth sailing.

  1. Just a quick question, in your personal opinion, what do you think would be the best vpn solution for newbies like me? I haven’t really used one before and none of my friends and family have tried it either so I don’t really have trusted experiences to base it on. According to your rankings, CyberGhost is top 1 but if it were you, would you actually purchase this and rest easy knowing it’s worth the money? I just want to gather all the facts I can before committing to purchasing a VPN. Would love it if you could help me out on this. Thanks.

    • I’d be happy to help. Like the article, I also place CyberGhost as my top 1 VPN. This would be perfect for a beginner like you because every step from setting it up to using it is very simple and easy to use. I completely stand behind CyberGhost because it is not only the most popularly used VPN, it’s also one of the safest out there. I actually already used this a couple years back when I was travelling and Netflix wasn’t available in the country I was visiting. I can safely say that it worked like a charm. I was honestly amazed at how easy and hassle free it was. I used to always complain and stress about what I would do whenever I was abroad and wanted to watch a movie at my own convenience. Then my father recommended I use CyberGhost and I was made into a believer. As for being worth the money, personally, I would say it definitely is. If you go on their website, they have a bunch of different subscription options from 1 month to 3 years. If you want the best value for your money, I suggest getting the 3 years since it’s only around 3 euros per month. Either way, when you do purchase a VPN, there’s so much more benefits you can enjoy other than being a way for you to watch movies on trips.
